#ABOLISHICE MARCH AND RALLY:

Join ICE Out Of Fresno this Saturday for an #AbolishICE march and rally in downtown Fresno beginning at 8:00am. Central Valley Sheriffs have led anti-immigrant efforts that have resulted in the deportation of thousands of individuals and as a result have had a devastating impact on our communities. We will highlight four specific Sheriffs that have chosen to stay on the wrong side of history and have escalated attacks on our community through the entanglement of local law enforcement with ICE.

ASYLUM CLINIC

TRUTH ACT FORUM IN FRESNO

The Truth Act requires a local legislative body to hold a community forum annually if local law enforcement allows ICE access to any individual. Since 2015, Fresno County Sheriff Mims has worked closely with ICE to deport over 500 people. We need community members to attend the forum and ask key questions and demand transparency about the entanglement between ICE and the Fresno County Sheriff's Department. SIREN offering an Immigrant Rights Organizer Fellowship Program within its Central Valley Community Organizing Program. The Fellowship will provide the Immigrant Rights Organizer Fellow an opportunity to acquire grassroots community organizing and issue organizing skills while directly impacting policies for immigrants and refugees residing in the Central Valley. The Fellow will be equipped with organizing skills they can apply to their future job or bring back to their community for change.

Foro Comunitario de Verdad

La Ley de la Verdad requiere que un cuerpo legislativo local realice un foro comunitario anualmente si la policía local permite el acceso de la migra a cualquier individuo. Desde 2015, el Sheriff Mims ha trabajado estrechamente con la migra para deportar a más de 500 personas. Necesitamos miembros de la comunidad para hacer preguntas y exigir transparencia sobre el enredo entre la migra y el Departamento del Sheriff del Condado de Fresno. ¡Debemos responsabilizar a Sherff Mims y eliminar a ICE de Fresno!

Take Action: #Save the Census

On March 26, 2018, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that he had directed the Census Bureau to add a question on citizenship status to the 2020 Census. This alarming decision is bad for the census, bad for our communities, and bad for America. The Census Bureau has invited the public to comment on the 2020 Census, which will be an opportunity to create a strong, clear public record from a range of stakeholders and experts who oppose the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. 

We need the community to stand up and fight back against this untested, unnecessary citizenship question and ensure ALL of our communities are counted. The deadline to submit public comment is August 7.

1. Submit individual comment.  You can submit a unique individual comment HERE. 

2. Have your organization write and submit a comment. We need to show the breadth of voices in opposition to the citizenship question. To download a public comments template with suggestions about how to personalize your comment, click here

3. Spread the word.  Amplify our message and encourage others to submit comments and share the message on social media.

SIREN Applauds Ruling Upholding State Laws Protecting Immigrants and Urges Employers to Protect Immigrant Workers

Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge John Mendez rejected much of the Trump Administration’s efforts to temporarily halt California’s laws to protect immigrants. In his decision, the judge denied a preliminary injunction against the California Values Act (SB 54) which limits local law enforcement entanglement with ICE, AB 103 which authorizes California’s Attorney General to monitor immigration detention centers, and a provision of the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (AB 450) that requires employers to provide employees notice of I-9 audits. While the judge temporarily suspended other provisions of AB 450, including requiring employers to ask for a judicial warrant before entering private workplace areas and to ask for a judicial warrant or subpoena before releasing private employee records, employers may still voluntarily comply with the law. The following is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN):

“The decision by Judge Mendez finding that much of these laws are binding and cannot be halted is a major blow to the Trump’s xenophobic and white supremacist agenda. The California Values Act is needed especially in parts of the state like the Central Valley where sheriffs and local law enforcement are frequently entangled with ICE and have cozied up to the Administration’s attacks on immigrants. And with more immigrants and refugees being incarcerated, monitoring and oversight of immigration jails are needed now more than ever. And though we are disappointed that the judge temporarily suspended the judicial warrant requirements for ICE to enter private areas of workplaces or get private employee records, we urge all employers to stand with their immigrant workers and voluntarily exercise their right to deny entry to immigrant agents without such a warrant and not release private employee records without a warrant or subpoena. This decision shows that we are in the right in leading the way, and California is on solid ground in creating shields of protection for the community.”

SIREN Disappointed by Failure to Redesignate TPS for Yemen

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued its decision regarding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Yemen. The agency renewed TPS for 18 months but that only allows current TPS beneficiaries to renew their status. The agency failed to redesignate TPS for Yemen which means that Yemeni nationals who arrived to the U.S. after January 4, 2017 will not be eligible to apply for TPS. The following is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN):

“While the extension of TPS will allow current Yemeni beneficiaries to renew their status, this falls far short of what is necessary. Individuals and families continue to flee a country that is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises including ongoing bombings and armed conflict, food crises, and cholera epidemics. Those who arrived after the January 2017 deadline are in no less danger if they are forced to return. We will continue to call on Congress to seek a permanent solution for those left out of today’s decision as well as individuals from Haiti, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua who are facing forced deportation due to their termination of TPS.”

SIREN aplaude el cumplimiento de las leyes estatales que protegen a los inmigrantes y urge a los empleadores a proteger a los trabajadores inmigrantes

Ayer, el juez de la Corte de Distrito de los Estados Unidos John Mendez rechazó gran parte de los esfuerzos de la Administración Trump para detener temporalmente las leyes de California para proteger a los inmigrantes. SIREN decepcionada por no haber redesignado el TPS para Yemen

SIREN- JUNE ENEWSLETTER | BOLETÍN DE JUNIO

Our country is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis of our generation, as this administration is preying upon immigrants and refugees, caging children, and criminalizing vulnerable people that are fleeing violence and hunger.  The sounds of children sobbing in desperation for their mothers and fathers have moved millions to rise up, get involved and help. People of different cultures and faiths are showing solidarity as we fight to bring justice to the thousands being detained by ICE.

While we may feel distraught and frustrated by the unfathomable circumstances we are in, we must continue to fight and focus on the progress we seek.

Progress and change come from the people. Our work to foster civic engagement, and to create a more informed and active community of leaders is more important than ever. SIREN is working actively to build the power of multigenerational immigrant and refugee leaders to carry this movement forward, and create the changes we need today. In this newsletter we are proud to share several stories that bring us hope for the future.

2018 OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY AGENCY OF THE YEAR AWARD

SIREN was proud to be honored by the Santa Clara County Psychological Association as the “2018 Outstanding Community Agency of the Year” at their awards gala on June 2, 2018. We are partners in their mission to promote health and human welfare in Santa Clara County and beyond. We extend our deepest gratitude to President Sally Anne Broder and her team for this honor!

SIREN’S SUMMER YOUTH LIBERATION INSTITUTE 2018

Our SIREN immigrant youth leaders have arrived this summer and are learning the tools to achieve social change. In the current political climate, these young people understand that immigrant and refugee lives are under attack and that they have the power to make a difference! 

Join us in welcoming our program participants who are breathing new life into our movement. We also wish to thank the Cliff Bar Foundation and the Diocese of San Jose for generously supporting our work to build the power of our next generation of leaders!

WELCOME SIREN CENTRAL VALLEY FELLOW AYDE MENDOZA

SIREN welcomes Ayde, and all of our Summer Fellows in the Central Valley and Northern California. We look forward to sharing their stories with you over the summer.

“My name is Ayde, and I am an incoming sophomore at Fresno State. My family immigrated to the US from El Salvador to provide a better future for my sibling and I. My parents, neither whom have any formal education, work very hard to provide for my family. My father currently labors as a farmworker and my mother runs a small business. Both my parents are undocumented, and are TPS recipients, which has been terminated by the Trump administration. It is very disheartening to learn about the new immigrant policies that are being implemented and scary to think about what could possibly happen to my family and the millions of immigrants who live in this country. I grew up in a small town called Mendota, where there is a large immigrant community and the fear of deportation is runs high.  

As a first generation Salvadoreña, I am very motivated to pursue a higher education to support my family and give back to my community. During my time at SIREN’s Fresno office I will be working on a research project that tells the story of why Salvadoreños immigrated to Mendota, California, what their life is like and the impact on their health and well-being caused by the current administration’s decision to end TPS for Salvadoreños seeking asylum.”

SIREN SAVING LIVES – STORY OF A REFUGEE

Irosshi is a 23-year-old activist from Maracaibo, Venezuela. He grew up witnessing many injustices in his country, so at a very young age he decided to get involved with the opposition party, Primero Justicia, firmly believing that in doing so, his country would soon change for the better.

Unfortunately, his dreams for a better Venezuela fell apart over the past two years. After President Hugo Chavez died, President Maduro took over and things quickly took an ugly turn. Due to the high rise of inflation, food and basic necessities became extremely expensive. Irosshi recalls that it is common for there to be no light or internet for weeks at a time. This only further fueled Irosshi’s desire to organize and create a change in his beloved country. Unfortunately, the government became extremely violent towards dissenters. 

Irosshi experienced this violence first hand on two separate occasions – as he was threatened and persecuted by government military officials, and also physically beaten. He was left with no choice than to leave his beloved country.

Due to his limited funds, Irosshi began filling out a political asylum application by himself but soon realized that something so sensitive needed to be handled by experts. He called several organizations throughout the Bay Area to see where he could receive help. Every single one that he called told him that they either did not help with political asylum cases or did not have the capacity to help. He was beginning to lose hope until SIREN took his case. 

According to Irosshi, SIREN’s Supervising Attorney Shouan was always professional, kept Irosshi informed of his case, and even helped him deal with the trauma. Irosshi is tremendously thankful to the SIREN team for being there for him when he needed it the most. He said, “When everyone else said no, SIREN said yes.”

Irosshi currently has been going to several interviews hoping to obtain a job in computer science, the degree he earned in college. He hopes to be able to soon send money to his father and grandmother in Venezuela.

VOTAR PARA GANAR/VOTE TO WIN

SIREN's Civic Engagement team wrapped up the primary election season by registering over 10,000 voters in the Bay Area and the Central Valley, and making over 30,000 phone calls to immigrant and youth voters in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Counties in the Central Valley.  As a result we helped to pass all state propositions that were recommended in SIREN’s multilingual voter guide.

Below is a rundown of the ballot initiatives that we weighed in on:

Prop 68: Fund for Parks and Water - PASS

Prop 69: Diesel tax - PASS

Prop 70: Corporate-led attack on clean energy - FAIL (We recommended voting NO)

Prop 71: Better start date for ballot measures - PASS

Prop 72: Support for home water rain collection - PASS

We also had a clean sweep, with all the local measures we focused on:

Measure A: City of Santa Clara voter ranking - FAIL (We recommended voting NO)

Measure B: Weakens affordable housing in San Jose - FAIL (We recommended voting NO)

Measure C:  Expands affordable housing in San Jose - PASS

Measure E: Mountain View-Los Altos High School District bond - PASS

Stanislaus County

Measure V: Patterson Joint Union School District Bond - PASS

Merced County

Measure X: Los Banos School District Bond - PASS

Nuestro país está atravesando la peor crisis humanitaria de nuestra generación, ya que esta administración está atacando a inmigrantes y refugiados, enjaulando a los niños y criminalizando a las personas vulnerables que huyen de la violencia y el hambre. SIREN está trabajando activamente para desarrollar el poder de los líderes multigeneracionales de inmigrantes y refugiados para llevar adelante este movimiento y crear los cambios que necesitamos hoy. Es muy desalentador aprender sobre las nuevas políticas de inmigración que se están implementando y es aterrador pensar en lo que podría pasarle a mi familia y a los millones de inmigrantes que viven en este país. Crecí en un pequeño pueblo llamado Mendota, donde hay una gran comunidad de inmigrantes y el temor a la deportación es alto.

Como salvadoreña de primera generación, estoy muy motivado para buscar una educación superior para apoyar a mi familia y devolverle a mi comunidad. Durante mi tiempo en la oficina de SIREN en Fresno, estaré trabajando en un proyecto de investigación que cuenta la historia de por qué los salvadoreños inmigraron a Mendota, California, cómo es su vida y el impacto en su salud y bienestar causado por la decisión de la administración actual de fin del TPS para los salvadoreños que buscan asilo ".

SIREN SALVANDO VIDAS - HISTORIA DE UN REFUGIADO

Irosshi es un activista de 23 años de Maracaibo, Venezuela. Creció siendo testigo de muchas injusticias en su país, por lo que desde muy joven decidió involucrarse con el partido de la oposición, Primero Justicia, creyendo firmemente que al hacerlo, su país pronto cambiaría para mejor.

Desafortunadamente, sus sueños de una Venezuela mejor se desmoronaron en los últimos dos años. Después de que el presidente Hugo Chávez murió, el presidente Maduro se hizo cargo y las cosas rápidamente tomaron un giro desagradable. Debido al alto aumento de la inflación, los alimentos y las necesidades básicas se volvieron extremadamente caros. Irosshi recuerda que es común que no haya luz o internet durante semanas. Esto solo impulsó el deseo de Irosshi de organizarse y crear un cambio en su amado país. Lamentablemente, el gobierno se volvió extremadamente violento con los disidentes.

Irosshi experimentó esta violencia de primera mano en dos ocasiones distintas, ya que fue amenazado y perseguido por oficiales militares del gobierno, y también físicamente golpeado. No le quedó más remedio que abandonar su amado país.

Debido a sus fondos limitados, Irosshi comenzó a llenar una solicitud de asilo político solo, pero pronto se dio cuenta de que algo tan sensible debía ser manejado por expertos. Llamó a varias organizaciones en todo el Área de la Bahía para ver dónde podía recibir ayuda. Todos y cada uno de los que llamó le dijeron que o bien no ayudaron con los casos de asilo político o que no tenían la capacidad de ayudar. Estaba empezando a perder la esperanza hasta que SIREN tomó su caso.

Según Irosshi, el Fiscal Supervisor de SIREN, Shouan, siempre fue profesional, mantuvo a Irosshi al tanto de su caso e incluso lo ayudó a lidiar con el trauma. Irosshi está tremendamente agradecido con el equipo de SIREN por estar ahí para él cuando más lo necesitaba. Él dijo: "Cuando todos los demás dijeron que no, SIREN dijo que sí".

Irosshi actualmente ha ido a varias entrevistas con la esperanza de obtener un trabajo en ciencias de la computación, la licenciatura que obtuvo en la universidad. Espera poder enviar pronto dinero a su padre y abuela en Venezuela.

El equipo de Compromiso Cívico de SIREN cerró la temporada de elecciones primarias registrando más de 10,000 votantes en el Área de la Bahía y el Valle Central, y haciendo más de 30,000 llamadas telefónicas a inmigrantes y jóvenes votantes en Santa Clara, San Mateo y Condados en el Valle Central. Como resultado, ayudamos a aprobar todas las propuestas estatales que se recomendaban en la guía multilingüe para votantes de SIREN.

As another month passes by, we continue to witness assaults on our immigrant and refugee community coming from the president himself, Attorney General Sessions, the Department of Homeland Security, among others. 

• Infants and children are being torn from the arms of their parents.
• Refugees fleeing violence and hunger are being criminalized and labeled as gang members and human traffickers.
• Just this past week, Claudia Patricia Gómez González, "La Princesita," a young, unarmed Guatemalan woman was murdered by a Border Patrol officer.

When will these atrocities stop? When will justice and human decency prevail?

As we face these formidable challenges, SIREN asks that you join us in the movement to defend immigrants and refugee rights. Also join us in our efforts to register and inform voters between now and June 5. By making our voices heard at the ballot box, we can change the current tide. We must also prepare the next generation of leaders in our community. This is at the core of SIREN’s mission to support immigrants and refugees to become their own agents of change.

One of the most powerful ways to support immigrants and refugees in our community is by voting for pro-immigrant leaders and policies.  SIREN’s “Votar para Ganar” (Vote to Win) campaign aims to contact and mobilize immigrant voters in Spanish and Vietnamese to vote in the June 5 election in Northern and Central California. Trump Administration’s Efforts to De-humanize Immigrants

This week, the Trump administration has put on full display their core belief that immigrants and refugees are not worthy of human dignity and respect. The president himself, while meeting with law enforcement officials, referred to immigrants as “animals.” His comments are consistent with his and his administration’s desire to cleanse the country of immigrants and refugees, and to deny the positive contributions that immigrants have made for generations. Furthermore, top national media outlets reported this week that the Trump administration was exploring the use of military bases for warehousing immigrant children detained at the border. While history is filled with tyrants who have spread hate and lies to justify their trails of blood and destruction, SIREN will not stand for history to repeat itself. “The United States of America is in crisis as its core values are being challenged by racist, anti-immigrant officials in the new administration. They have left no room for misinterpretation when they are callously referring to immigrants as below human, and when immigrant children are being stripped of their innocence. These are not the actions of a civil society. SIREN is more vested than ever in fighting this administration to ensure that immigrants and their children are treated humanely, with dignity and respect. We will continue to mobilize voters and educate the community about their rights until the hateful rhetoric and actions of this administration are stopped,” said Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of SIREN.

Los Esfuerzos de la Administración Trump para Deshumanizar a los Inmigrantes

Esta semana, la administración de Trump ha puesto de manifiesto su creencia fundamental de que los inmigrantes y refugiados no son dignos de la dignidad y el respeto. El propio presidente, mientras se reunía con oficiales de la ley, se refirió a los inmigrantes como "animales." Sus comentarios son consistentes con su deseo y la de su administración de limpiar el país de inmigrantes y refugiados, y de negar las contribuciones positivas que los inmigrantes han hecho por generaciones. Además, los principales medios de comunicación nacionales informaron esta semana que la administración Trump estaba explorando el uso de bases militares para el almacenamiento de niños inmigrantes detenidos en la frontera. Mientras que la historia está llena de tiranos que han difundido odio y mentiras para justificar sus rastros de sangre y destrucción, SIREN no tolerará que la historia se repita.  "Los Estados Unidos de América está en crisis ya que sus valores fundamentales están siendo desafiados por funcionarios racistas y anti- inmigrantes dentro de la administración Trump. No han dejado lugar a interpretaciones erróneas cuando se refieren cruelmente a los inmigrantes como inferiores a los humanos, y cuando a los niños inmigrantes se les despoja de su inocencia. Estas no son las acciones de una sociedad civil. SIREN está más comprometida que nunca en luchar contra esta administración para garantizar que los inmigrantes y sus hijos reciban un trato humano, con dignidad y respeto. Continuaremos movilizando a los votantes y educando a la comunidad sobre sus derechos hasta que se detengan la odiosa retórica y las acciones de esta administración ", dijo Maricela Gutiérrez, directora ejecutiva de SIREN.

2018 Liberation youth Institute // 2018 INSTITUTO DE VERANO DE LIBERACIÓN

The Summer Liberation Youth Institute is a program designed to empower immigrant youth with grassroots community organizing, policy advocacy, civic engagement, and campaign development tools to build a movement for social justice. Youth will engage in critical discussions on systems of oppression and privilege, education access, LGBTQ issues, racial  and economic equity, problem solving strategies, organizing and much more! 

Participants will gain skills in:  immigration policy advocacy 101, campaign planning, civic engagement, political education, media training, community organizing, and will have the opportunity to attend field trips to; social justice and advocacy events, and conduct legislative  visits. 

Program Dates: 10 sessions (10 am -5 pm)
 June 14, June 16*, June 19, June 20, June 23*, June 26, 
June 28, June 30*, July 3, July 5 (*Saturdays)

Program Graduation: Monday July 9, 2018 (5:30 -7:00 PM)

2018 INSTITUTO DE VERANO DE LIBERACIÓN PARA JÓVENES:

El Instituto de Verano de Liberacion para jóvenes es un programa diseñado para empoderar a los jóvenes inmigrantes con conocimiento acerca de como apoyar las políticas y leyes, herramientas de compromiso cívico y de desarrollo de campañas para construir un movimiento para la justicia social.Los jóvenes participarán en discusiones críticas sobre los sistemas de opresión y privilegios, acceso a la educación, LGBTQ, injusticia racial, desigualdad económica, estrategias de resolución de problemas, y mucho más. 

Los participantes obtendrán habilidades de política de inmigración, defensa de la deportación, planificación de campañas, compromiso cívico, asuntos sociales, organización comunitaria, y tendrán la oportunidad de asistir a eventos de justicia social y defensa, oficinas legislativas para reunirse e interactuar con funcionarios electos y líderes comunitarios. 
¡El instituto tiene como objetivo capacitar a los jóvenes a entender problemas sociales y aprender a como apoyar el cambio social!
