SIREN’s core value is immigrant empowerment. We focus on immigrants themselves being the primary agents of change. By strengthening and deepening the participation level and leadership of immigrants, we work toward long-term systemic changes that promote social justice and equality, freedom from oppression, and an end to poverty. Through these long-term systemic changes, immigrants will have the opportunity for individual/social responsibility, self-determination and political participation. By accomplishing this, we will have a society that is compassionate, inclusive and united.
Just before Christmas, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it would start the year with a series of raids targeting families who came to the U.S. seeking refuge. So far activity has been reported in Texas, New York, California, Missouri, and Maryland. In November, the Morgan Hill Police Department announced a proposed change to the city’s towing policy. Their current policy, established after significant advocacy from local immigrant community groups, put a halt to the unnecessary car impoundments for individuals driving without a license. Police Chief David Swing has stated that since the AB 60 law has passed, starting January 1, 2016 the Police Department will be changing its policy for towing unlicensed drivers based on an officer’s discretion.
