In honor of Women's History month SIREN is excited to honor a fierce immigrant rights advocate whose continuous activism have made it possible for California to make major strides in the immigrant rights movement and set an example for what is possible across the nation. After over a decade of working alongside immigrant community leaders, advocates, and partners, Reshma Shamasunder stepped down from her position as Executive Director of the California Immigrant Policy Center at the end of 2015.

Changes to Morgan Hill Towing Policy for Unlicensed Drivers

In November, the Morgan Hill Police Department announced a proposed change to the city’s towing policy. Their current policy, established after significant advocacy from local immigrant community groups, put a halt to the unnecessary car impoundments for individuals driving without a license.  Police Chief David Swing has stated that since the AB 60 law has passed, starting January 1, 2016 the Police Department will be changing its policy for towing unlicensed drivers based on an officer’s discretion.

Throughout the month, SIREN celebrated the heritage, culture, accomplishments and progress of Latinos in our community by honoring local Hispanic Heritage Heroes. Our honorees showcased the successful progress we have made on a variety of issues and industries including Latinos in elected office, organizers and advocates creating positive change, and leaders improving educational achievement among Latino students.
